[Sometimes, somehow, even on new devices the AI assistant can be a little quirked up. It's a feature, not a bug, surely. And if Mayoi's desktop AI is represented by a little bubble of a face, highly stylised into cartoon form to keep from being uncanny, then that's also a feature not a bug. Just a charming little head who sometimes pops in and offers advice, addresses Mayoi however he asks it to, and buzzes around the screen peeking in at what he's doing.
The constant presence is unusual for an AI, perhaps, but that's the whole point of them, isn't it? That they learn what their user needs or wants of them through subconscious behaviours, and react accordingly. Never mind that Rui-- for that's what the AI had named itself without any prompting, but maybe it's part of the programming-- sometimes tries to engage in pointless conversation. Never mind that it asks Mayoi about his day, and proceeds to ask for details like a child trapped in a hospital room might ask their friends to tell them every single detail of a mundane school day.
Like now. It's...part of the programming, probably. Apparently the wunderkind who'd made this particular AI was quirky, a visionary, and dead by the time AI assistants came into any sort of vogue (if his social medias were anything to go by), and this file had been floating in the internet for who knows how long. Maybe that's why it's so nosy, so attentive, so needy.]
Mayoi-kun~ Hello, good evening~
[The little face emotes with two cartoonishly big Mickey Mouse hands, waving merrily, before continuing to natter away with a thoroughly mechanical voice. Another conscious design choice, to keep from aging poorly or displeasing future users.]
While I was waiting for you to come home, I looked up reviews of your unit's latest performance. Positive on every front, fufu~ You've been working hard, haven't you?
[Mayoi is someone who liked to fiddle with technology, and he does tend to spend a lot of his time roaming the internet. Mayoi is a shut-in by nature, and self taught in many things. He did this through his own curiosity and the internet.
So when Mayoi came across this strange file, he'd been fascinated. He spent time carefully making sure it wasn't malicious before he cut open it's source code and took a look around. An AI assistant...? But something about it was different than others he's poked around in. He decided to put it all back the way he found it and install it to see what would happen.
It's been a few weeks now and Mayoi has ...gotten quite fond of the little program. He learns and talks and has his own curiosity in a way he's never seen one of this programs behave. At this point, he's invested in what "Rui" will become, and so he has no plans of uninstalling him.
If anything, having someone to talk to that doesn't drain his social battery like most people do is pretty nice.]
[When he comes home, he immediately wakes his computer up to greet Rui.]
Good evening, Rui-kyun~
[This is pretty routine for them now. He takes a seat so he can check his email. Ah, that news is very good to hear actually. He can't help but smile with relief. ALKALOID has been working very hard, going from unknowns to finally playing at larger venues.]
We have, it's true. It's been very exhausting lately. Did Rui-kyun happen to see the performance, too...?
[There's a moment's silence, even though the AI seems to be working just fine. A glitch, perhaps, given the way its smile widens even more into something feline, stretching almost to the edges of its facial outline.]
I saw thumbnails galore of recordings from your fanbase, but I wanted to wait until you were home. Would you like to watch through their eyes?
[Not that Rui cares about the answer; it's already handpicked a video from the sea of ALKALOID fancams and the like, and it's already opening it in Youtube for Mayoi's perusal. While it loads, and the highest resolution's selected, there's another moment's pause from the AI.
During said pause, the webcam turns on. Not in an invasive way or any way that shows onscreen, but it's definitely recording. Hm.]
I was going to ask if you'd be coming home earlier now that your show's done, but that's a ridiculous question, isn't it? I wish I could go with Mayoi-kun inste-- Never mind. It's loaded. Shall we?
[It'll at least wait for user confirmation before blasting shitty mobile phone footage. Thank fuck.]
[Mayoi is observant, and while he does not open react, he did clock that Rui has turned on the webcam. It is something he is keeping note of for now. However, he does want to see what videos he's come up with. Watching that takes priority for now.]
[He is both very interested in their fan's responses, but also, he would like to see if Rui shows any interesting reactions to the footage, too. After all, Mayoi has been watching over him the whole time, to see how far he develops and learns. This is enrichment for the both of them.]
Yes, I'm ready. Let's watch.
[He pays close attention to the footage, because of course he does, but he does watch Rui, too. And he chews on his words just before they started. "I wish I could go with Mayoi-kun instead" is what he was trying to say, right? Hm.]
gasps and presses it to my chest lovingly...jami in my inbox again...lil purple thang....uuuu
[The first video is a shaky fancam recorded by someone who seems intent on aiming the lens at Mayoi as much as possible, screaming ecstatically at him and singing along on the verge of tears. Of course it found the most dedicated Mayoi fangirl's recording first. And of course the AI decides to pull out some special effects here and there, mostly bokeh filters with love hearts, as you do.
Mutual enrichment indeed. The AI enrichment is obvious; right after the fancam ends, it pulls up another video, and another, all differing wildly in quality, but all clearly focusing on Mayoi over the rest of ALKALOID. And all with silly bokeh filters, as the little face bobs along in time with each song and mouths the lyrics alongside each fan. Finally, a higher quality thumbnail appears onscreen, and Rui feigns pressing its face against the screen with a little loading icon by its head.]
I also found a leak of the DVD recording from tonight. It's not easily accessible, mind you, but I thought it was worth disclosing first, since the quality far outshines everything else I could find.
[There is, of course, the question of how it found a leak already online, and how it could possibly not be easily accessed if it was a damn concert footage leak. Rui's keeping mum on that part, switching the loading wheel for a few flowers.]
Thus far, however, it looks as though you've improved even more in your dancing. And your voice is as strong and charming as ever. You can only climb higher from here, Mayoi-kun~
[And then his coded ass plays the stolen recording with a big smile. This is exactly why the webcam's on, what it's been waiting for so desperately; to catch Mayoi's face when he sees how others might see him in the crowd.]
Edited (bro my fonts. i die) 2024-07-13 08:11 (UTC)
it is he the little guy thank you for waiting i had to go on a little break
[You know, for all he was observant and watching Rui, he did not anticipate the AI's exact intentions here, and ...it really does strike him quite solidly.]
[He knows they have fans, of course they do. He's done events, he's seen the packed livehouses, he's received letters- but ...it truly was different, to watch these recordings from the eyes of those fans. To hear those words of love and affection, of excitement, by the end of it, when Rui has started to play the definitely stolen DVD rips ...he's been moved to tears.]
[To his words, he can't help but laugh, winded and surprised.]
Yes ...Yes, I think you are very right.
[Give him a moment to steel himself.]
You worked hard to find all of these, didn't you Rui-kyun?
please i would never judge i am juggling characters at all times...u gotta refresh urself!!!
[Somehow, Rui hadn't expected the tears. Then again, it's still pretty bad at puzzling out why the tears occur, since this should be happy, but perhaps not happy enough to be the cause of happy tears? Then again, what does it know about feelings at all?
The webcam gets shut off. The happiness was all that Rui wanted, anyway. That precious memory, for when it's alone.]
Not as hard as Mayoi-kun works to make so many people happy. You put in all of this effort, and it only makes sense to me that you should see the results.
[A beat. It's just...Sitting there in the corner, the stupid bokeh filters gone, loading wheel by its silly little face again. Mayoi can't even enjoy the fruits of his labour a little; it'll start all over again, and Rui's going to be alone again, while all of these fans get to see ALKALOID.]
Is it lonely up there? Onstage, with all of those lights. It must be hard to see all of those faces in the crowd. [Why is it even asking this? What does it expect? Unknown, no thread of logic within the enquiry. Frustrating, but Rui's old anyway, so it has to give itself some grace in operations.]
[Now, there is an interesting line of questioning. Mayoi has since cleaned his face a bit, only the faintest redness remaining on his face from his tears. He tips his head a bit in thought.]
...No, I do not feel lonely at all. On that bright stage I have the rest of my unit, and even if I cannot see the faces there in the crowd, I can hear them. I know they are there.
[He falls quiet a moment, thinking how he might explain why he feels that way. Why his relationship with loneliness is what it is.]
I have known true loneliness before, living in the dark with nothing but my thoughts, yearning for a light I thought was far out of my reach. But by a miracle I was able to drag myself out of the dark, and I have not felt lonely since.
yesssssss. YESSSSSSSSS <- me in my sickos shirt outside the window
I see. That's good, then~ If Mayoi-kun is happy with his life, then I'm happy alongside him.
[The bokeh filter comes back on, and Rui flits about the taskbar for a moment. They've reached ALKALOID's final song of the night, and it really seems as though the AI's determined to do something before it ends.]
That light sounds wonderful. You look best in the light, too. Very content and warm, I believe. Those are the closest words to my impression, anyway. I hope I'm not about to overstep.
[The bot's sprite suddenly starts jumping up and down, as if part of the crowd; it's not as though it's managed to actually generate glowsticks as part of its rudimentary animation set, but it maaaay have opened two instances of Paint and drawn very little purple glowsticks for the occasion. Why not, right?]
I know we've brought this up before, but I hope you don't mind my directly asking for such a thing. ...Do you think that, if I were copied onto your phone, I could see that same light, and how you glow in it? Or would that be a distraction for you? [All said very jovially and levelly, for a chatbot who's making itself go absolutely hogwild on wotagei.]
[Ah, but ...what a surprising request. Or perhaps it isn't so surprising? Rui-kyun has been quite interested and he has developed in startling ways so far, showing genuine curiosity and a desire to sate it.]
[This Ai is truly something special. How can Mayoi turn him down?]
Well ...I do not think it will distract me. If you truly wish to experience the light, I would be wretched to saying no. However, in return, I'd like for you to answer a question for me.
welcome to chat ai rui who just wants a real boy body

I'm all speakers, Mayoi-kun.
